Freddie Prinze Jr. Guest Starring in David Boreanaz's Bones, Season 9

Buffy's boys are joining forces! Freddie Prinze Jr. will be guest starring on the ninth season of FOX's Bones, opposite wife Sarah Michelle Gellar's former Buffy the Vampire Slayer love interest, David Boreanaz. Prinze will play a CIA agent named Danny, an "armed and dangerous" former associate of Booth (Boreanaz) and Brennan (Emily Deschanel). (Boreanaz played vampire Angel on Buffy the Vampire Slayer and its spinoff, Angel.)

According to TV Line, which broke the news of Prinze's casting, his character will take an interest in Booth and Brenna's current murder investigation. Danny will be introduced in the Sept. 16 season premiere and may return for a multi-episode arc.

A teen heartthrob in the late '90s, Prinze has shied away from the limelight in recent years. He played Cole Ortiz on during the eighth and final season of FOX's 24 in 2010, and he guest starred in an episode of USA's Psych that same year. Since then, the California-born, New Mexico-raised star has been focused on his family with Gellar, 36. Married since 2002, they are parents to daughter Charlotte, 3, and son Rocky, 10 months.

Prinze also lent his talents to the animated feature Mass Effect: Paragon Lost in 2012, voicing the character of Lieutenant James Vega. He also voiced the character in the video game Mass Effect 3.

Gellar, meanwhile, is also returning to the small screen this fall. She stars opposite Robin Williams in CBS' The Crazy Ones, created by David E. Kelley. The sitcom premieres Sept. 26.

Sarah Talks Freddie On Bones

Sarah On Freddie's upcoming Bones Date With Ex-Buffy Love David Boreanaz: They Better Not Make Out!

Sarah Michelle Gellargave husband Freddie Prinze Jr. her blessing to appear on Bones this season opposite her former Buffy leading man David Boreanaz, but her endorsement came with one tiny caveat.

“As long as they don’t make out I think it’ll be fun,” the actress laughed to TVLine Sunday night at CBS’ Television Critics Assoc. press tour party, where she was promoting her new fall comedy, Crazy Ones.

All joking aside, Gellar revealed that Prinze’s potentially recurring stint on the Fox drama — in which he’ll play a covert CIA agent and old buddy of Boreanaz’ Booth — was negotiated at the pool.

“This actually all came about from David, Freddie and I hanging out two weeks ago,” she explained. “David sort of [floated the idea to us]. And I was like, ‘Sure!’ And Freddie was like, ‘Yes!’ It was literally a poolside conversation.”

Currently, Prinze is booked for one episode — the show’s Sept. 16 Season 9 opener — but word is there’s potential for a second.
